Medical Coders - Coders assign alphanumeric codes to specific illnesses, injuries, and medical procedures, under a system of coding that is used across the healthcare system, from doctor's offices and hospitals to insurance companies, federal agencies and international organizations. Hospitals and doctors use the codes for internal data collection and planning, while insurance companies and public agencies require the codes to reimburse healthcare providers. The codes are even used by international health organizations to track patterns of disease and the costs of healthcare.

Individuals with health information management skills such as billing and coding skills may be employed in a wide variety of locations. Since patient record coding and insurance billing affects every medical institution, persons with these skill sets are widely desirable. Employment may be in private practices, multi-practice clinics, diagnostic imaging firms, medical laboratories, hospitals, and contracting companies that provide billing, coding and medical records handling services to medical institutions.
