Medical Coders - Coders assign alphanumeric codes to specific illnesses, injuries, and medical procedures, under a system of coding that is used across the healthcare system, from doctor's offices and hospitals to insurance companies, federal agencies and international organizations. Hospitals and doctors use the codes for internal data collection and planning, while insurance companies and public agencies require the codes to reimburse healthcare providers. The codes are even used by international health organizations to track patterns of disease and the costs of healthcare.

At Mandl School, The College of Allied Health located in New York City, Medical coders and billers course is designed to introduce students to the theory and skills used in theory and practice of CPT (procedure codes), ICD-9-CM (diagnoses codes), and HCPCS codes for medical outpatient billing. In addition to coding procedures, students learn billing software programs, claims reimbursement, and various medical-related software for data protection/data transmission.

This course introduces to students as well to the various activities of the medical office, including the usage of medical software, medical terminology, medical coding and insurance billing and reimbursement management. Successful completion of this program enables the student to meet the entry-level requirements to perform a variety of tasks at different healthcare facilities. Students will also prepare for the entry level coding exam.
