Nursing Assistant (Evening/Weekend 120 Hour Program)

Classroom hours (57); Skill Development (33); Externship (30)

In today's hospitals and extended care facilities a nursing assistant is an important part of a healthcare team that typically includes many personnel, in addition to nurses. Nurse assistants are needed to provide routine care, such as formulating care plans-of-action; providing nursing assessment; administering medication; and assisting in surgery room preparation. Nursing assistants free nurses to provide specialized care, in accordance with each state's Nurse Practice Acts. The Mandl Nursing Assistant program prepares students to assist in all necessary areas of patient care. Some graduates of a nursing assistant program choose to continue their nursing education, ultimately pursuing a four-year nursing degree and then, a nursing career.

The nurse assistant must not only be educated in the actual procedures being performed, but must also be able to observe a patient's condition/vital signs and report this information back to the nurse. The nurse's other responsibilities prevent him or her from spending extended periods of time in the room with the patient, so the nurse assistant is often referred to as the nurse's "eyes and ears." A nurse assistant graduate must also have a strong grasp of emergency procedures and be able to stay calm in stressful situations. He or she must be able to initiate a Code Blue and be thoroughly educated in CPR.

  • Formulating healthcare plans
  • Administering medication
  • Assisting in surgery room preparation
  • Observe a patient's condition

Nursing Assistant degree program includes the following career goals:

Nursing assistants have been identified as the third largest-growing career area, in response to the increasing need for senior care in long-term care facilities, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and senior housing. The U.S. Department of Labor projects that the need for the employment of nursing assistants will increase 23.5 percent to a workforce of 1.7 million by 2010. Current statistics indicate that a nurse assistant education is a good degree investment and a solid career choice.

It is also widely known that the long-term care/nursing home industry has one of the highest employee turnover rates of any profession. Recognizing the critical staffing shortage issues long term and convalescent care managers face, Mandl School, The College of Allied Health, located in New York City, offers a 120-degree hour nurse assistant curriculum that comprehensively educates individuals for employment in the long-term care industry. This nursing assistant degree program also addresses the most common barriers to recruitment and retention of qualified caregivers. Our students receive the education necessary to sit for the New York State nursing assistant board exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. The Mandl campus community is located right in Midtown Manhattan, at the center of several bustling New York City neighborhoods, including the NYC theater district – and is convenient to other major colleges and universities in New York City, as well.
